9 Tips to Help You Organize Your Resume and Get the Gig
Nine times out of ten your closet isn’t the only thing that needs some organizing. It’s highly likely your resume could use a little attention too. As a matter of fact, resume organization is one of the key reasons that people never get a phone call for an interview from the recruiter.
Remember that half-eaten bagel next to the coffee grounds in the trash can? Due to poor organization, your resume might be keeping them company right now and keeping you from getting that dream job.

1. Remember contact information always comes first.
The first thing employers want to see when reviewing your resume is who the person is that they could potentially consider for the job. Your name and contact information should be typed out over five individual lines and never as a single line.

2. Section headers come second and are always capitalized.
Sometimes it can be a bit tricky when deciding how different areas of your resume should be formatted. Section headers are one of those areas where it’s best to commit to all caps so that recruiters’ eyes quickly spot key information about your education, career highlights, work experience and skills.
3. Always leave a blank line before and after headers and job descriptions.
Leaving blank lines where necessary allows each section to have the appropriate spacing needed and it prevents information from running together which can create confusion for the recruiter. Remember, the more a recruiter gets frustrated from reading your resume, the higher the likelihood they will toss it.
4. Consistency is key!
Applicant tracking systems look for patterns of data so it’s important to keep formatting consistent. If you did it one way the first time, keep doing it the same way every other time.
5. Keep your sections separated.
Don’t clump together your achievements with your certifications. Keep them separate so that they are easily recognized by a recruiter’s eye when reading your resume.
6. Your resume should be in reverse chronological order starting with the most recent job to the oldest.
Also, never omit employment dates. Be sure to list the month and year you held each position. When listing your company’s name and the title of the position you held, putting it in bold also helps the recruiter easily identify your prior work experience. Finally, company summaries which gives an overview of what the company is about, should be italicized and placed directly below the name of the company and right above the title of the position you held.
7. Include all relevant education.
When listing your education, include the university name, your major and the month and year of completion. Without a month and a year, the applicant tracking system will think you are still in school even if you graduated years ago.
8. Tailor your resume for the job.
For each job that you apply to, your resume should specifically highlight key elements that would make you a great fit for that position. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to your resume!
9. Be thorough.
Review your resume many times and edit it to ensure that it’s consistent and looks great without being too cluttered. This will help make it stand out above the rest.
