Forensic nursing is a cross between health care and the legal system. They gather evidence from victims of crime, examine victims of sexual assault, treat patients in correctional facilities and serve as expert witnesses. Specialized, emotional and increasingly sought-after work and so is the pay.
According to state-level data from NursingProcess.org, which was compiled from sources that align with BLS, the national average forensic nurse salary is $86,360 per year. This is approximately $41.52 an hour.
Wages can range from $62,580 in South Dakota to $129,370 in California, depending on specialty and employer.
What Does a Forensic Nurse Do?
Forensic nurses serve in several distinct roles:
- SANE nurses (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) perform physical exams, gather biological evidence and care for sexual assault victims in a trauma-informed manner. They are frequently called to serve as witnesses in criminal trials.
- Forensic psychiatric nurses can be employed in correctional institutions, secure psychiatric units, or forensic hospitals with patients who have a mental illness and legal involvement.
- Legal nurse consultants collaborate with attorneys by reviewing medical records, providing malpractice advice and serving as expert witnesses.
- Correctional nurses provide primary health care within a correctional environment full of special clinical and safety issues.
- Death Investigators collaborate with the Medical Examiner to document injuries and determine cause of death.
Each role has a different pay structure and employer landscape.

SANE Nurse Salary
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are one of the most well-known roles in the field of forensic nursing. SANE nurses generally work in a hospital emergency department, sexual assault response centres, or a community health clinic. Their work is time-sensitive, evidence-critical and legally consequential.
The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) issues two SANE credentials:
- SANE-A — for nurses specializing in adult and adolescent patients
- SANE-P — for nurses specializing in pediatric patients
The average salary for the SANE nurse falls somewhere between that of the forensic nurse, ranging from about $68,000-$95,000 a year, depending on the state and employer. Shift differentials and on call pay are among several factors that can lead to higher pay for hospital SANEs than for those at community organizations.
In the legal field, LNCs can make much more than the $50,000 or so they report earning in their salaried positions, as they often are hired by attorneys at $150–$350/hour to review cases. One of the highest earning potentials in forensic nursing, without advanced practice.
Forensic Nurse Salary by Specialty
| Specialty | Typical Pay Range | Notes |
| SANE-A / SANE-P | $68,000–$95,000/yr | On-call model adds to total earnings |
| Legal nurse consultant | $80,000–$130,000+/yr | High end for independent consultants |
| Forensic psychiatric nurse | $70,000–$95,000/yr | Correctional facilities or secure units |
| Correctional nurse | $65,000–$90,000/yr | State/federal prisons typically pay more |
| Death investigator | $55,000–$80,000/yr | Medical examiner offices; government pay |
Legal nurse consultants who work independently, charging attorneys $150–$350/hour for case review, can earn substantially above the salaried range. This is one of the highest earning potentials in forensic nursing without moving into advanced practice.
Which Setting Pays Forensic Nurses the Most?
Employer type is more important than many nurses realize. The highest-paying jobs are at family justice centers, in government (county, state, federal) offices and at attorneys’ offices and legal firms.
The government employs forensic nurses and they can enjoy structured scales of pay, union representation in many states, full benefits, pension schemes and much more. In most cases, federal correctional nurses will have higher salaries than their state-level counterparts.
Forensic nurses, including SANEs working in emergency departments, are paid in accordance with the hospital’s salary scales and other incentives such as shift differentials, overtime and benefits.
Sexual assault response centers (SA-RCs), which are typically funded by grants, may have community organization-based forensic nurses, who commonly earn the least among other types of incorporated forensic nurses. The work is absolutely necessary, but with the help of grants, salaries are capped, whereas with hospitals, they are not.
How Certification Affects Forensic Nurse Pay
Forensic nursing has a formal certification body: the Forensic Nursing Certification Board (FNCB). Key credentials include:
- SANE-A (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Adult/Adolescent)
- SANE-P (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Pediatric)
- AFN-BC (Advanced Forensic Nursing – Board Certified), a graduate-level credential for advanced practice forensic nurses
Certification does not guarantee a specific salary bump, but it frequently determines whether you qualify for senior forensic nursing roles at hospital systems or government agencies. In competitive markets, an AFN-BC or dual SANE-A/SANE-P credential can move a candidate into the top half of a posted range.
Forensic Nursing vs. Other Specialties — How the Pay Compares
| Specialty | Average Annual Pay |
| Legal nurse consultant (independent) | $80,000–$130,000+ |
| Forensic nurse (national avg) | ~$86,360 |
| Emergency nurse | ~$78,000–$95,000 |
| Registered nurse (all specialties) | $97,550 (BLS median) |
| Pediatric nurse | ~$69,000–$82,000 |
Forensic nursing pays competitively with emergency nursing for staff roles. Legal nurse consulting at the independent level outpaces most staff RN specialties.
Is Forensic Nursing Worth It Financially?
Many specialties offer higher salaries than the national average for forensic nursing and there are careers in forensic nursing that most clinical nursing paths do not have. The work is non-repetitive. You will be summoned to appear in court. You’ll gather proof to send bad guys to jail or to free the innocent. You’ll testify.
Not a job that most nurses have.
Legal nurse consulting and government forensic nursing are the highest-paying positions. Grant-funded community organizations are the lowest. Select your setting as carefully as you select your specialty.
