From Basic to Monitored: Med-Surg Unit vs. Med-Surg Tele Explained

Title image for the blog on Med-Surg Unit and Med-Surg Tele

Welcome to the world of med-surg unit and med-surg tele, which sound the same but are two different units demanding different levels of monitoring and focus. The med-surg unit in the hospital is a fast-paced environment, where nurses are running around giving care to the patients. In med-surg tele, you will hear monitors beeping and heart rhythms flashing on screens. If you are a new grad who is confused about which career path to choose, or a travel med-surg nurse choosing your next assignment, this blog is here to guide you. So, let’s dive in!

What is med-surg unit?

Med-surg unit in the hospital is a fast-paced environment where you will find adult patients recovering from different types of conditions, such as pneumonia, cardiac arrest, infections, surgeries, etc. The key features of the med-surg unit are:

  • Taking vital signs, but there is no continuous monitoring.
  • Equipment consists of hospital beds, oxygen tanks, IVs, etc.
  • The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5 or 1:6.

What is med-surg tele?

In med-surg tele, there is continuous cardiac monitoring for patients with heart conditions or who are at risk of cardiac arrest. The key features of med-surg tele are:

  • Patients are hooked to telemetry monitors, which are wireless, to track their heart rhythms.
  • The equipment consists of telemetry monitors and other standard med-surg equipment.
  • The patient population has a heart condition that needs to be continuously monitored, and nurses should be able to read EKG strips and respond to alarms.

Pros and cons of the med-surg unit and med-surg tele

If you are a seasoned travel nurse and want to choose your next assignment, or a new grad who is confused about which career path to choose, then here are the pros and cons of both specialties to make it easy for you to choose your next assignment or your career.

  • The skills that nurses learn in the med-surg unit, they can easily choose other specialties such as ER, telemetry, and ICU etc.

Cons of nursing in med-surg unit

  • The nurse-to-patient ratio in the med-surg unit is 1:5 to 1:6, which means more workload on nurses.
  • The nurses need high physical stamina while working in the med-surg unit because they have to be on their feet all the time, and there is frequent lifting and turning of patients while providing care to them.
  • The patients in the med-surg unit are usually in stable condition and do not require continuous monitoring, and therefore, nurses have to rely on their assessments.
  • Sometimes it can be overwhelming for new grad nurses to work in med-surg units.

Med surg tele

Pros

  • Nurses can detect the deterioration of a patient’s condition early through continuous monitoring on cardiac monitors, which can prevent complications and save the life of a patient.
  • Nurses can enhance their skills in EKG interpretation, cardiac assessments, etc.
  • Nurses with this experience can choose other roles in nursing, such as cardiac care, critical care, etc.

Cons

  • Patients are in critical condition, and therefore, even a small change in their condition can lead to a big problem; therefore, nurses have to be alert all the time.
  • Nurses must have telemetry knowledge, such as EKGs, heart meds, etc.
  • Nurses can get stressed with continuous alarms of the monitors, and also if there are any monitor issues.
  • Staffing can be an issue, and there is the possibility of a workload and burnout.

What is a telemetry floor?

The telemetry floor or telemetry unit is the hospital unit where patients with heart conditions are continuously monitored. These patients’ heart activity is monitored through wireless electronic equipment. The duty of nurses in the telemetry unit is to continuously monitor these heart patients and intervene when there are any changes.

What are the key features of the telemetry floor?

  • Patients wear devices like EKGs, and nurses monitor them continuously.
  • Patients with heart conditions, chest pains, or irregular heartbeats come to the telemetry unit.
  • Nurses in the med-surg telemetry unit can interpret heart monitor readings.
  • The nurse-to-patient ratio in the meg surg tele unit is 1:4 to 1:5

What is the med-surg floor?

What are the common diagnoses on the med-surg floor?

On the med-surg floor, you will see patients with different conditions. Some common diagnoses on the med-surg floor are recovering from surgeries, infections, pneumonia, COPD, heart failure, stroke, liver disease, etc.

What is the difference between a PCU and a med-surg unit?

In PCU, the patient population is less critical than ICU patients but more critical than med-surg unit patients. In the med-surg unit, the patients are in a more stable condition.

Conclusion

Both med-surg and med-surg tele are the backbone of healthcare. In the med-surg unit, you will see patients with different diagnoses that do not require continuous monitoring. In the med-surg tele unit, you will have patients with heart conditions who nurses continuously monitor through cardiac equipment. If you want to work in a med-surg unit, you need to have physical stamina, multitasking skills, time management skills, etc. If you choose med-surg tele as your career, then you should have the knowledge of monitoring equipment, reading EKGs, quick thinking, etc.
